History

Paper production has a long tradition on the Flensburg Fjord, with roots going back to the 17th century. Take a look back at our history with us:

REAL HANDIWORK: THE FIRST BEGINNINGS

The horror of the 30 Years' War lingers on in the form of poverty and high unemployment, so a Mecklenburg paper maker, Hinrich Gultzau, seizes his chance in 1696. Paper was a precious commodity at the time and when, freshly arrived in Flensburg, he found a suitable plot of land for a paper mill, he succeeded in obtaining permission to build it, arguing that it would stimulate the economy. The foundation stone for the paper mill is laid.

A LEAP FORWARD: INDUSTRIALISATION

With industrialisation, not only were all manual steps in paper production mechanised, but raw material production and paper manufacturing were also separated from each other. The first paper machine was installed at Fjord Paper's current location in Flensburg as early as 1848.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES: FIFTIES TO NINETIES

In the mid-fifties, the company began to produce hygienic paper, followed by carbonless paper in 1970. In the 1990s, a licence agreement with Mitsubishi Paper Mills Ltd. led to the production of our thermal papers, which were particularly popular for fax machines at the time. In 1999, the paper mill is taken over by the Japanese group.

IN THE HIGH-TECH AGE: INNOVATIONS AT THE TURN OF THE MILLENNIUM

This was followed by the era of high-tech coating processes for special papers, e.g. for bank statements or with forgery-proof features, as well as the birth of our inkjet papers. The company construct also continues to develop and from 2010 became Mitsubishi HiTec Paper Europe GmbH.

A major and forward-looking innovation in 2015 is our barrier paper for fully recyclable packaging of food and non-food, which strikes a chord in terms of sustainability and the avoidance of plastic.

HERE AND NOW: READY FOR THE FUTURE

Since 1 September 2023, the story continues under a new name. Fjord Paper Flensburg.

It is already clear today that a lot will happen in the coming decades. Because paper has a future! Made from sustainable raw materials and extremely versatile, it finds its application in many areas, also and especially in the age of digitalisation and energy transition. With this perspective in mind and the enthusiasm for our products, we take innovation seriously – and remain curious.
